Welcome to the Safer Communities Partnership’s Training & Resources hub. Here you will find information on Safeguarding Adults, Domestic Abuse, Prevent Duty, and Fire Risk Awareness training available to professionals and volunteers in Wokingham Borough. These courses are designed to ensure our workforce and community partners have the knowledge and skills to protect  Adults at Risk, Victims/Survivors of Domestic Abuse and those at risk of Radicalisation, in line with the Care Act 2014, the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015.

Adult Safeguarding Training

Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) provides Level 1 Safeguarding Adults training  for staff and partner agencies. This programme is aligned with the principles of adult safeguarding.

Course & Level Who Should Attend Format & Duration How to Book
Level 1 – Safeguarding Adults Awareness All staff and volunteers across the partnership (including new starters). No prerequisites. Half-day virtual session (approx. 3–4 hours)  My Learning Portal – search “Adult safeguarding Level 1” and self-enrol.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service logo

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) offers free fire safety training to help professionals and volunteers identify and reduce fire risks for vulnerable adults living in the community. This training supports the Care Act 2014.

Course & Level Who Should Attend Format & Duration How to Book
At Risk Programme (ARP) – Fire Risk Awareness Domiciliary care staff, supported living providers, social workers, occupational therapists, community health workers, volunteers, and anyone supporting vulnerable adults. Live online session (60–90 minutes) delivered by RBFRS Prevention Team.

This training is mandatory for Adult Social Care staff. The training is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended, for all other staff and volunteers working with vulnerable adults.

Prevent Duty Training

Wokingham Borough Council provides Prevent Duty training to help staff and partners understand their responsibilities under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015. This training is aligned with Home Office guidance.

Prevent Referral (Notice, Check, Share)
Staff working with children, families, or vulnerable adults (e.g. Children’s Services, Education, outreach). Prerequisite: Prevent Awareness. Online e-learning module. Click here: PREVENT referrals

Prevent training is mandatory for all WBC staff and must be refreshed every 2 years.

The Prevent strategy is part of the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy (CONTEST), aimed at preventing people from being drawn into extremism or terrorism. Under the Prevent Duty, certain organisations have a legal duty to ensure frontline staff understand Prevent and know how to raise concerns. The Home Office provides free online training to help professionals and volunteers understand and fulfil their Prevent duty.

Domestic Abuse Training

Wokingham Borough Council offers a comprehensive Domestic Abuse Professionals Training Programme, developed in partnership with the Domestic Abuse Coordinator, Partnership Board, and local services. The programme supports the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and local safeguarding priorities, and is open to WBC staff, partner organisations, and voluntary sector professionals.

Domestic Abuse Awareness All staff, partners, volunteers, and elected members. No prerequisites. Half-day virtual session (approx. 3 hours). Covers types of abuse, signs, safety planning, and support pathways. My Learning Portal – search “Domestic Abuse Awareness” or use the “Domestic Abuse Offer” filter.
Working with Perpetrators Practitioners engaging with perpetrators (e.g. social workers, safeguarding leads). Half-day virtual workshop. Focus on risk, SafeLives DASH RIC, and safe engagement strategies. My Learning Portal – search “Working with Perpetrators.”
DASH Risk Assessment & MARAC Introduction Recommended: prior DA awareness training. WBC Housing, ASC, and CSC practitioners. Recommended: DA awareness or frontline experience. Half-day face-to-face session (approx. 3.5 hours). Introduces DASH risk checklist and MARAC process. My Learning Portal – search “DASH” or “MARAC.”
Domestic Abuse & the Care Act Adult social care practitioners and managers. 3-hour virtual session. Explores how care and support needs intersect with domestic abuse and safeguarding duties. My Learning Portal – search “Domestic Abuse Care Act.”

Additional Specialist Modules

Shorter sessions (1–2 hours, mostly virtual) are also available throughout the year, including:

  • Domestic Abuse in the Deaf Community
  • Domestic Abuse and Older People
  • Supporting Male Victims
  • Impact on Children and Young People
  • Honour-Based Abuse and Suicide
  • Stalking and Harassment
  • Family Court and Child Contact

These sessions are open to  staff and partners and are advertised on My Learning and during Domestic Abuse Awareness Month (October).Courses are free of charge and support WBC’s commitment to safeguarding and early intervention.

Safeguarding Adults Training (Involve Wokingham – Voluntary Sector)

Involve Community Services (Wokingham) offers practical, low-cost safeguarding training tailored for the voluntary and community sector. These courses are delivered with support from local authorities and align with the Care Act 2014 and local safeguarding standards.

Adult Safeguarding Level 1 (Basic Awareness)

Introductory course for anyone working or volunteering with adults in the community. Covers what safeguarding is, types of abuse, signs of risk, and how to report concerns. Format: ~3-hour interactive session, often delivered online via Microsoft Teams.

Adult Safeguarding Level 2 (Intermediate)

For those with regular contact with vulnerable adults or greater safeguarding responsibilities. Explores all categories of abuse in depth, how to respond to disclosures, and the six safeguarding principles. Format: ~3-hour in-person workshop at local venues (e.g. Wokingham Fire Station). Participants receive a certificate of attendance. Group sessions for organisations can be arranged on request.
